I had an interesting discussion this morning with one of my friends, Jennifer Fisher, about character. This made me realize that since I am so passionate about this subject matter, I needed to write a post about it.
According to Webster’s dictionary, character is “One of the attributes or features that make up or distinguish an individual.” I’ve always prided myself on being a person whose word meant something. “You can take it to the bank”, is a phrase I use often. Being true to your word is very important to me and therefore defines my character.
A few character traits that I feel are also important are:
Dwight Eisenhower said “The qualities of a great man are “vision, integrity, courage, understanding, the power of articulation, and profundity of character.” This statement shows me that he was a man of strong character.
The true test of a person’s character is shown when he/she is pushed. Should you push back, or should you accept the fact that you are being pushed, and try and find out the reason and see if you can solve the problem without pushing? I choose the latter.
Another test is to watch how a person treats someone they feel are in a lower class than themselves. It’s always my hope that I will rise to the occasion.
Helen Keller said “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” I totally agree with her statement. Struggle makes us stronger and hopefully better.
We can all overcome our character flaws if we choose to. Isn’t that wonderful?
What characteristics do you feel are important?
